About
what is into the light?
Into the Light began as an undergraduate senior thesis project to reduce stigma associated with mental health and share stories about mental health. The main component of Into the Light is a podcast series where college students can share anonymous mental health stories, since it can be very daunting to share something so personal publicly. Into the Light allows students to express their mental health stories without the worry of being shamed due to mental health stigma. While not all stories submitted are featured on the podcast, all stories are shared on this website where you read them. Every episode features an interview with an expert in mental health. Moreover, each podcast episode also features an accompanying book chapter which explores the topics in more depth from a scientific, evidence-based perspective.
a note from the founder
How Into the Light came to be
Throughout my brief academic career, I’ve come to understand that there are various prominent and permeating issues in mental health. One of the most significant problems is the stigmatization of mental health globally. I believe that we need to increase global awareness and value for mental health, especially among college students who are increasingly more stressed, depressed, and anxious.
I wanted to build a project that could help students feel less isolated in their experiences, which is how Into the Light came to be. I thought this series could be an opportunity to begin normalizing conversations around mental health while listening to expert advice and knowledge on very real issues that affect not only college students but millions of people around the world.
This series is for anyone who has ever wondered about mental health, a place to learn about its impact, and to learn from leading experts in mental health. And at its core, this series is a place where students can share their mental health stories anonymously knowing that it is a safe space and that they will be heard. I hope that listening to this podcast series is able to bring some light into your life.
Warmly, Dulce Rivera
